What is Aikido
Aikido is a Japanese Martial art which uses a variety of locks and throws to control attackers. Aikido also focuses on moral and mental development.

Brief History of Aikido
Aikido was founded by O'Sensei (Morihei Ueshiba). Aikido is a development of ju jitsu and more specifically Daito-ryu Aiki-jujutsu. One of O'Sensei's students, Koichi Tohei, was given his 10th dan, the first aikido practicioner to have been awarded such a rank. O'Sensei, pictured below (seated), died in 1969 and his son Kisshomaru Ueshiba took over the running of the organisation. Tensions began to develop and they finally came to a head in 1974 when Koichi Tohei, pictured below (standing), officially resigned from the main organisation (the Aikikai). This resulted in the creation of our style of aikido, formally Shin Shin Toitsu Aikido, or Ki Aikido.
